About the Grand Dukedom of Pomerania and Livonia

The Grand Dukedom of Pomerania and Livonia is an idyllic micronation situated in lands that were once part of the ancient territories of the German Empire, Holy Roman Empire, Kingdom of Poland, Duchy of Lithuania and the ancient Duchies of Livonia and Courland.

These are the most fascinating Germanic Lands of Europe.

About the Grand Dukedom

These ancient empires and monarchies no longer exist, but the Grand Dukedom of Pomerania and Livonia survives, spread over a wide area covering some of the most beautiful regions of Eastern Germany, Denmark, Poland, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Courland, & Karelia, with a status similar to any government in exile, but having no territorial ambition about its former territories or desire for recognition or diplomatic relationships with the current Governments of these countries.

Historically, the Grand Dukedom of Pomerania and Livonia is based upon the ancient territories of a duchy in Pomerania on the southern borders of the Baltic Sea.

It existed as a country for various periods from the 12th century until the mid 17th century, ruled by Dukes of the House of Pomerania, and it has a rich, often violent, but always intriguing history during the half a millennium it was in existence.

Throughout the 12th and 13th centuries, Pomerania saw itself under the influence of Poland, the Holy Roman Empire’s Duchy of Saxony, and Denmark – in fact, at various times during this period, Pomeranians, Saxons and Danes were either sworn enemies or close allies.

During the 14th century, disagreements and bloody conflicts resulted in the partition of Pomerania on two separate occasions.

Yet just over 100 years later towards the end of the 15th century, despite constantly changing alliances and brutal fighting, Pomerania was once again unified under Bogislaw X.

This unification was relatively short-lived, however, and following the Protestant Reformation in the early 16th century, Pomerania again found itself partitioned numerous times, as it was frequently caught up in the various struggles and conflicts across the region.

Final reunification wasn’t achieved until the middle of the 17th century when Bogislaw XIV became the last Duke of Pomerania.

The duchy was finally dissolved in 1637, following Bogislaw XIV’s death.

Even with the numerous conflicts, changes in territory, and constant outside influence, from the first ruler, Wartislaw I, to the last, the duchy has always been ruled by members of the House of Pomerania (or Griffin Dynasty as it became known) – a lineage that spans over 500 years.

This long, rich, and fascinating history, is one of the reasons why the Grand Dukedom of Pomerania and Livonia evokes so much interest and appeal today.
